The Smith is an active partner in the cultural and community life of Geneva and surrounds, featuring local performances, hosting meetings, and cheering area students as they cross our stage each June for their high school graduations. They and Tubman laid the groundwork for women’s suffrage but did not live to see the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920, guaranteeing women the right to vote. The 29th Annual Convention of the New York State Women Suffrage Association was held, in part, at the Smith on November 4th and 5th, 1897. Suffragist Susan B. Anthony spoke at the convention in the Smith as did the Rev. and Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, known for her work in the national suffrage and temperance movements and her work for world peace. The newspaper lists numerous other attendees, women known for their countless works to better society, of which the name, Harriet Tubman, Auburn, is listed. For 128 years, the Smith Opera House (the Smith) has hosted entertainment of various genres to enthusiastic audiences. Looking at decades’ old local newspapers, it also appears the Smith Opera House welcomed discourse on social movements including the fight for women’s suffrage.
Yet, just 10 miles away, Seneca Falls, the site of the first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848, steals the historical show of the suffrage movement not Geneva, New York. A massive restoration project launched in 1994 set as its goal the renovation of the building’s exterior to its original 1894 facade, and the interior to its 1931 eclectic art deco opulence. A marquee was removed from above the outside doors, revealing detailed busts of William Shakespeare and Edwin Booth.
Over the course of its 125-year history, the opera house has had quite a few name changes. As The Times first reported in November, and as Fisher himself confirmed as recently as last month, he is seeking to sell a share of ownership to outside investors for $500 million. He would then use the proceeds to help pay for the new Las Vegas ballpark. Uncertainty around the public funding could spook potential investors. We perform five productions a year with The Nutcracker featured at the State Theatre in downtown Ithaca.
Since 1894, the Smith Opera House has thrived as the center stage of the Finger Lakes, offering quality performing arts and cultural opportunities for area residents and regional visitors. With events open to the public, the theater is an ongoing symbol of historic preservation, non-profit perseverance and artistic excellence. It has a beautiful interior that was carefully restored in the early 1990s. The Smith’s box office will be open for in person and over the phone sales Tuesday-Friday from 10am-4pm.
